Notes From the Artist
Having been lost in the shuffle after the acquisition of Private Music by BMG, I found myself being bought out of my contract and in the possession of a great deal of money with which to record. I had initially tried to hire Gill Norton (Pixies, Foo Fighters) to produce it, whom I had met and spoke with at great length after one of the band’s shows opening for The Who, but who ultimately ended up working with the Foo Fighters because of scheduling conflicts. Instead, his management turned me on to Warne Livesey, whose production credits included The The and Midnight Oil, and with whom I would ultimately work with for most of my career.
Underdogs was a massive learning experience for the band and also produced some of its finest moments. Unfortunately, it also produced a few tenuous relationships with executives at what would later become the band’s label. I will never forget hearing about an inter-office bet as to how many copies various staff members thought the record would sell, or how some believed the Apparitions video to be the band’s kiss of death, even though it, along with significant radio play, ended up catapulting the record to near double platinum status – something that a great many people later attempted to take credit for. Personally, I’ve always credited the song for its success, but what do I know?– Matthew Good ([1])
